The tune has a job—until it does not
Barge's Lift on the Hollow Bell uses calls about load and direction to keep a crew together. The tempo matters at work; afterward singers invent impossible cargo and insults. Zeno's Second Fire, Stay fits pauses between hammer strikes and is sung to stoves, infants, tools, and tired adults.
Albino's Wash It White, Find It Red has labor, faith, and protest versions. Banning a verse can teach it to a wider audience. In the Nocturn round Seven Lights, One Dark, seven voices enter while an eighth stays silent and signals the ending. Children compete for the silent part.
Jayjo makes music from pipe, rail, wire, breath, cups, tools, engines, drums, recordings, and voices. A work rhythm can become dance music or a love song. Not every performance carries a hidden message; some people simply want to sound good together.
The joke travels farther
Bright Toma circles so many counter windows that he grows old, returns as the clerk's supervisor, and sends the clerk to another desk. The Perfect Dry Room keeps everything safe but cannot be entered without admitting wet air. The Standard Body, designed by committee without inconvenient needs, turns out unable to live or work.
The Rat Who Rented a Room tells of a Rimwise improving a landlord's wall and being charged rent. It moves next door with its useful effects. Careless tellers calling the animal Ratkin are corrected: Beastkin people and rat-bodied Rimwise are not interchangeable.
A tale is not a field report
Some say rain repeats a widow's knocking and brings the missing home; other versions bring an imitation or only an answering memory. Pipe-tail brides link nesting fiber to marriages, while naturalists point to the food and thread weddings leave behind. Omm denies tying two pieces of rain together but corrects the storyteller's knot.
Folklore carries knowledge, prejudice, affection, propaganda, and nonsense together. Court, Fourwater's ordinary legless dog, has acquired heroic stories while mostly choosing warm laps. A useful route account still names weather, body limits, and when the teller passed. An entertaining story can preserve somebody without making every detail a fact.
