A reason to open the shutters
The Open Gutter arrives with a dependable thin-rain window after a long wet. Neighborhoods clean channels, remove temporary covers, and race seed shells, wax boats, cups, and carved scraps through safe stretches. Zeno judges engineering, Barge values boats that can race again, Albino brings color, and Nocturn brings dusk lamps. At the Split, arguments between the district heats outlast the final.
Patchnight displays repaired objects before the deepest wet. Prizes include the ugliest strong repair and the one involving the most unwilling relatives. A shared patch can carry a romantic confession; returning it intact can decline without wrecking the work.
District celebrations
Barge's Bellwake Regatta tests cargo balance, rescue, boat handling, and bell interpretation while crews trade insulting songs and ridiculous decorations. A quiet memorial crossing follows, without a ranking.
Albino's Brightgut Color Fall sends tested pigments through controlled rain sheets. Makers publicly name their material and demonstrate it. Old garments retain the year's stains, and collected runoff makes unpredictable glazes. Nocturn's Seven Lights Long opens work, witness, remembrance, courtship, play, creature-safe, and freely beautiful light. Tactile routes and sound markers are part of its design.
At the Fourwater Table, the Split branches one long table across temporarily closed crossings. Districts contribute food, songs, and witnesses; serving order is taken comically seriously. An open spoon welcomes conversation. A turned spoon asks for company without questions.
Games and little occasions
Slipcount awards safe recovery as well as water carried. Drainbones rewards carved scraps balanced across chalk channels. Name Chain grows an increasingly absurd remembered story. Roofshadow identifies silhouettes. Four Corners, No Center bargains over changing crossing rules. Soft Horns uses padded, ridiculous false antlers to challenge assumptions about effortless balance.
Households also celebrate a first safe crossing, repaired breathing equipment, a debt forgiven, recovered sleep, or the moment a guest receives a shelf. Joy takes fuel, labor, stock, safety, and cleanup; it can change routes and friendships afterward. A celebration leaves its own memories, worth keeping through the next wet season.
