EVERRAIN

Eight people behind the counter

The city's systems repeat through workers with particular fears, skills, families, and compromises.

Gates and allocation

Lena Vo is an Ascending Guardian checkpoint clerk in Tier 2. Her job secured heat, dry shoes, and care for her father. She sometimes repeats a harmless question so an applicant can repair a dangerous answer, but protects her family from the risk of being noticed. At home she breeds blue cup moss and quietly sings banned Albino verses.

Sweeper route captain Bram Keel is good at evacuation and uses the same competence for removal. He hides a damaged shoulder beneath his uniform. At home he maintains his daughter's mobility wheels with confiscated tools. His private tenderness does not return those tools to the mechanic.

Clinic allocator Hevra Tall once worked as an Albino street setter. She keeps a private record of people denied resources and visits some after work. Her unpaid generosity strains her household without correcting the allocation system.

Models and evidence

Toll assessor Ossen Marr loves bridges and elegant load tables. Standardized-body calculations overcharge people whose safest route is longer or whose load is awkward. His mother's unauthorized warm room serves the consequences of the fees he approves.

Sera Ninefold, an Eye's evidence listener, knows a coherent story is not necessarily true. Her work rewards making a usable account from fractured testimony. At home among Nocturn musicians she accepts improvisation and competing family histories that her official record would trim.

Upper-tier animal exclusion officer Cal Wren understands fauna and can relocate a nest carefully. His hidden refuge saves animals displaced by the clean spaces he enforces, while concentrating them near lower workers who did not agree to carry that burden.

Witness and the meal

Public witness registrar Marda Quill tries to protect people from predatory testimony sellers. Licensing also allows institutions to reject an unlicensed truth. Her own adoption depended on an informal witness chain. Mismatched cups sit on the public side of her desk.

Blessed kitchen quartermaster Iven Doss manages grain, fuel, bedding, care supplies, and the work behind a sermon. They try to keep meals unconditional while interpreters treat repeated attendance as spiritual consent. A friend who left still receives food under a false household name.

Their lives extend across the city independently of Zeta's route. Their pressures arise from work that can be useful, harmful, and personally necessary at once.
