The wait is part of the crossing
Gate corridors gather possessions, slow bodies, separate companions, and move waiting crowds out of public sight. Rails are polished by palms and token slots scarred by repeated handling. People turn proof outward before anyone asks. A queue band can admit a traveler to the waiting system without granting the right to finish the journey.
Legitimate ascent may follow work placement, sponsorship, an approved household, ward apprenticeship, or closely watched medical transfer. It is rare and conditional. Forged identity, borrowed clearance, reused access, bribery, and service-route smuggling carry their own risk; a useful shortcut does not erase the next checkpoint.
Three different throats
Sump Gate connects Tier 0 to Tier 1 and is known below as the Squeeze. Its shallow wade makes dry possessions vulnerable before inspection. Clerks sit behind glass, crowd wardens keep bodies moving, and a breaker can reorganize a queue that has begun to act like a community.
Cargo Catechism sits between Tier 2 and Tier 3. Human lanes and freight lanes meet repeatedly at inspection platforms. Crates keep moving while people wait. Weight, hazard, work role, and proper tags can carry more authority than a person's reason to cross.
Clearline Vestibule admits travelers from Tier 4 toward the Pinnacle through glass and subtle thresholds. A mismatch may produce a courteous reroute instead of an accusation. Temperature, light, and sound change before a visitor hears that recognition failed.
Objects that open a way
The Seam Token is part coin, part tag. Its notches suggest a route, tier range, and use; a reader may return it, retain it, or send its holder elsewhere. Forgers reproduce shape more easily than the wear that experienced handlers expect.
Ration chits, shift stamps, route slips, clinic tokens, verification bands, work badges, invitations, and exception seals each open a narrower possibility. A pending tag can keep a person in limbo after every immediate need has become urgent.
Burrow Sliver scrip passes through Tier 0 to Tier 2 for particular outcomes: a service cut, an overlooked detail, or a safer place in line. It leaves a material trace. Even a successful bargain can tell somebody later that the traveler touched a forbidden part of the city's circulation.
