Zeta shelters Inky in his coat while descending through the city.
Zeta & Inky

The man beneath the assignment

Zeta grew up in Tier 3, where a clean room can conceal the work and damaged bodies that keep it clean. He trained as a medic and served as a Chaser, tracking and containing the creatures Jayjo preferred to call manageable. He reads an injured body before a weapon, a failing route before a speech, and an absent name before anyone admits somebody is missing.

Warner, his field partner, vanished during a Lensface Crow event in a freight corridor. The report recorded no casualty. Zeta kept describing what he had seen after the city considered the matter resolved. Discharge and forced descent followed. His history is not a battlefield death story: Warner remains missing, and no body has settled the question.

What care looks like

His competence is practical rather than unlimited. He checks breathing, recognizes restraints that will injure, notices a creature refusing a route, and works with the materials and other people available. When frightened, he can mistake numbness for control and turn someone he loves into a problem to carry. His hands often begin helping before he has found a reason to call it care.

Zeta meets the rat-bodied Rimwise Inky during the descent. Their relationship begins with food, warmth, shelter, and repeated choices to return. It is not an old pet relationship or a prophecy. The Servant’s use of Inky places a living body at the center of Zeta’s coerced bargain with Concrete Hell.

A body the realm recognizes

He is lean, with a black beanie, a thin mustache split at the center, flat white eyes that do not glow, and worn layered clothing. Rain and injuries accumulate rather than resetting between encounters. The origin of his eyes and his unusual compatibility with living concrete remain unresolved.

Concrete Hell can brace him through existing material, but it does not make him a sovereign or an inexhaustible weapon. What it recognizes as useful may not be what Zeta wants preserved. His most difficult work is learning how to keep another person safe without deciding that safety gives him ownership.
