EVERRAIN

Water, warmth, and the dry cupboard

Clean water and a place to dry are everyday work in a city where every tier sends its consequences downhill.

A dented broth pot, a repaired cup, and a folded mended cloth.
Things kept in use

Before the kettle boils

Early-caught rain, controlled spring lines, condensate, and stored water supply Jayjo. Their safety depends on the surface, the route, the vessel, and the work done after collection. A clean source can be spoiled by one dirty container. Households separate drinking water from cooking, wound, animal, and wash water; moving a ladle between them can start a serious argument.

Cloth removes visible debris, not every contaminant. Fuel makes boiling costly. Water keepers, filter bakers, pump crews, catch-roof stitchers, and carriers supply the labor behind a cup that looks ordinary. Gray water has other uses: cooling, washing, small turbines, and suitable cultivation. Black runoff carries sewage or industrial contamination. Specialists recover useful residues from it; that does not make it drinking water.

Who gets the warm place

A kitchen wall, forge, conduit, engine, compost bed, or legal heating loop may keep a room alive. Heat cooks food, preserves medicine, dries bedding, and helps a body recover. It can also bring fumes, burns, and crowded sleeping places. A warm room with bad ventilation is not a safe room.

Drying space follows need as well as contribution. The closest line may go to an ill person, a child, or someone who brought fuel. Visitors announce an outside door before opening it. Dense fur takes time to dry; an amphibian household may need clean humidity rather than the driest possible air.

Nothing simply disappears

Food scraps become stock, feed, fermentation, or compost according to condition. Wire, cloth, shell, glass, and broken fittings pass through repair markets. Contaminated waste still has to go somewhere, and recovery work can damage the people doing it.

One failure spreads. A power cut stops pumps, removes heat, and spoils food. A flood destroys bedding before illness appears days later. The dry cupboard matters because it holds several futures at once: medicine, seed, documents, a starter culture, a clean cloth. Wealth buys the ability to stop worrying about those futures for a while.

Two mismatched cups, medicine wrapping, patched cloth and a kettle.
