EVERRAIN

The Split — Four Roads Kept Open

The central meeting of the Rim districts stays neutral because closing it would hurt every side.

Two residents share water at a standpipe, with mismatched cups and a rolled bandage nearby.

A crossing, not a border ring

The Split stands at the central intersection of Zeno, Barge, Albino, and Nocturn. It is a braided corridor of widened lanes, bridge plates, checkpoint remains, water points, exchange beams, and triage pockets rather than a single plaza. Each district arrives with different goods and a different idea of an honest bargain.

No permanent authority rules the crossing. Market elders, neutral callers, kitchens, water keepers, witnesses, and medics hold it together. A closed path strands medicine, food, warnings, parts, and people in the wrong district. Neutrality lasts because everyone understands that cost.

The treaty practiced in public

Shared water points remain unblocked. A pursuer must present a claim rather than treat every approach as owned territory. Weapons must remain legible when challenged. The dead are named before possessions become salvage. Repairs made for the shared corridor cannot simply be converted into private shelter during the same storm.

There is no neutral jail. Consequences include trade bans, closed kitchens, refused witnesses, lost escorts, rejected repairs, and cut access to rope routes. A false claim that goods were Split-witnessed can survive only until somebody asks what the witness actually saw.

Where value changes shape

A Zeno repair buys Barge passage. An Albino wash process releases a medicine bundle. Nocturn information keeps a salvage crew out of bad water. A kitchen can turn shell stock, mushrooms, herbs, bread, and shared heat into a short truce around its benches.

Fourwater Court catches the confluence in screens and bridges. Witness Steps provides seats for public disputes. Umbrella Exchange links merchants' shelter, while the patched Red Seam carries competing stories of who once saved the crossing.

People live here

Stall lofts, edge rooms, mixed-district families, night workers, exiles, and couriers make the Split a home as well as a route. Belonging is visible in who stores bedding, keeps a cup, notices a missed meal, or knows a person's medicine.

Builders must fit incompatible needs onto one surface: horn clearance, tail space, protected wing folds, grip texture, gill-safe water, and room for mobility equipment. Triage begins before districts settle payment, but long recovery still needs a place willing to receive the patient. A neutral crossing cannot replace a stable home.
