EVERRAIN

Rimwise

Small, nonverbal seam lives whose practical intelligence grows through routes, objects, memory, and refusal.

Not one species

Rimwise names an ecological category, not a single animal or a tiny kind of Beastkin. Rat-bodied gutter runners, heat-seeking pipebacks, vent-flying sootwings, paper moths, and latch beetles develop around different food, heat, pressure, and route conditions.

Their origins remain disputed. Ordinary animals may have changed across generations near seams; older fauna may have preceded the city; the classification curse may have left a niche life could occupy. None of these accounts makes them creatures designed to serve people.

Learning the built habitat

They remember safe individuals, learn pump and door timing, compare paths, exchange objects, and refuse a route that once harmed them. They do not read ordinary text, know the future, speak Jayjo’s languages, or automatically obey after bonding. A card may mean a warm door without meaning the institution printed on it.

Rat-bodied knots overlap family and route groups. Young follow experienced bodies through micro-routes. Territory can be a sequence of warm wall, food gap, water bead, and exit separated by several human rooms. A colony removed from a building takes local knowledge with it.

What their work leaves behind

Rimwise eat insects, food scraps, fungi, mineral films, and other body-appropriate materials. They move spores and nesting fiber, clear small obstructions, consume trace residue, reveal leaks, and feed larger predators. Trace supernatural contamination can sicken them; it is not magic food that makes them invulnerable.

Abandoned caches, missing adults, daylight flight, or several body plans leaving together can signal trouble. The cause may be poison, cold, vibration, flood, a changed route, or supernatural pressure. Their behavior is evidence, not an infallible moral judgment or toxin test.

Care without capture

A healthy habitat offers dry pockets above runoff and more than one way out. Warmth, clean water, suitable food, quiet, and limited restraint can help an injured creature. A recovered Rimwise leaving is not failed care.

Inky’s white fur, black markings, boldness, and Servant bond are individual conditions. Rimwise are not born to be vessels. A cache may preserve food, cloth, useful scent, warmth, or play, and a human reading it as a message can be wrong.

A rain-dark doorway separates wet stone from a sheltered interior.
