Before work
Households check water, roofs, routes, food, and whoever is still asleep. Bedding comes down only after a roof is trusted. A kettle, engine cycle, school crossing, or neighbor's cough may announce morning. The same rain sounds different on a repaired patch, and someone who knows the roof notices.
An Outer Rim pocket may hold clean cloth wrapped inside less important cloth, a marking stub, cord, a lidded cup, protected medicine, and something saved for an absent person. Body-specific supplies are ordinary possessions: scale oil, horn padding, claw-safe fasteners, breathing fittings, or a comb suited to wet fur.
Rules without a notice
Announce a cold outside door before opening it into heat. Do not move another person's drying clothes nearer the stove without asking. Do not step on a laid-out tool order, bedding, tail, rope, or drain mark. Pass a cup by the grip someone can safely take.
Help begins by naming the obstacle, not declaring its owner incapable. Ask before touching a body, brace, horn, wing, breathing device, or mobility aid. A hanging cloth deserves the privacy everyone agrees to give it. Direct questions about a debt, former name, origin, or Mark may expose more than a stranger is entitled to know.
These customs travel and change. A gesture can be courteous in one household and intrusive in the next. There is no single citywide tap code. Familiarity comes from learning who means what, not collecting a universal phrasebook.
After the useful part of the day
People still burn dinner, cheat at cards, complain about snoring, grow fragrant plants that feed nobody, and spend scarce materials on a bright lining. Children build scrap boats and imaginary cities. Music slips through pipes and walls; courtship may be a preferred food texture or a repair made before anyone asked.
Some kindness is deliberately hard to invoice: the broth would have spoiled, the spare cloth was already cut, the route warning was meant for everyone. Mutual aid can also become controlling. Its quality shows in whether a person may refuse, negotiate, and leave. A place worth returning to allows tomorrow's argument as well as tonight's shelter.
