Four edges of a kitchen
A rain kitchen separates clean storage, wet preparation, usable heat, and a breathing gap. Rich kitchens can give each its own space. Crowded ones preserve the same distinctions through sequence: wash, cook, clear, dry, sleep. A sealed shelf above the splash line can be the whole clean edge.
Cooking follows available heat. Clean charcoal is valuable enough to trade. Damp fungal bricks smoke; scrap wood may retain unsafe treatments. Conduit heat is convenient until the allocation stops. A cook knows the fuel as closely as the ingredients.
Five tables
Zeno borrows forge heat. Anvil broth simmers around metalwork; weighted rivet cakes travel in pockets; cupsteam breakfast saves heat through carefully cleaned stacked vessels. Hospitality may sound like a complaint that the pot needs another mouth before it turns.
Barge secures knives and cups against motion. Hookfish blackpot, one-handed ropehand rice, and strong wake tea belong to decks where work interrupts meals. Albino cooks ask what water was cleaned of. Brightgut stew carries vivid color, chalk bread depends on genuine purified ingredients, and salt-bloom pickles preserve household cultures.
Nocturn offers lantern dumplings, vent-cured coldmouth strips, and quiet cups of hush tea. At the Split, fourwater pot combines district broths, witness noodles accompany agreements without magically binding them, and umbrella sweets turn fried dough into bent spokes, fish, and claws.
A portion is personal
Suspended baskets let several foods share steam without sharing ingredients. A household may set aside plain broth before seasoning, leave room for a breathing cup, protect a small diner from crowded feet, or serve spice separately for a scent-sensitive guest. Body needs are ordinary kitchen knowledge, not a performance for the table.
A return portion waits for someone still on shift or route. Crisp bread, an intact fruit, a real egg, or one saved spice can make a celebration. Tier 1 Beef remains a recognizable, poorly regarded canned ration whose blunt name settles little about its contents. The city has many cuisines beyond it, and people argue about flavor even on difficult days.
