Small enough to be dismissed
Inky is an ordinary rat’s size, with white fur, irregular black ink-blot markings, a long ringed tail, small dexterous paws, and a real body that becomes wet, hungry, cold, and injured. The eyes read as natural red or dark red, with reflection rather than emitted light. There are no runes, costume, permanent glow, or liquid body.
People can see Inky perfectly well. Many simply decide a rat does not matter. That dismissal sometimes leaves a checkpoint or wall gap unwatched; it is not invisibility. A child, predator, careful worker, or hungry resident can notice the same small body completely.
A private life in the seams
Inky learns routes through draft, scent, vibration, and repeated experience. Food, nesting cloth, crackling foil, and warm metal can matter for reasons Zeta does not understand. More than one cache and more than one exit make a place safer. A pocket closed for protection can still feel like capture.
Intelligence appears in waiting, route choice, object placement, refusal, and the decision to return. Not every stolen object is a clue. Sometimes it is interesting, warm, or useful for a nest. Rimwise knots and other seam creatures offer a social life beyond the relationship with Zeta.
The voice is somebody else
Native-language speech through Inky is the Servant’s override, not Inky learning to talk. The Servant depends on this sole established overworld anchor, but dependence does not grant permission. Jaw fatigue, thirst, trembling, changed sleeping places, and avoidance can continue after the conversation ends.
Zeta’s collar offers warmth, not title to a creature. Care means food that can be carried, water within reach, an exit left open, and time for a hand to be accepted or refused. Recovery from an injury does not automatically restore trust. Inky’s independence matters even when a choice helps nobody.
