EVERRAIN

An Atlas of Small Places

The Rim's quarters are remembered through food, tools, sounds, and the work a stranger would walk past.

East and west

In Zeno, Anvil Row follows metalworkers, rivet sellers, buckle menders, and heat taken from cooling baths. Cupstairs curls past drink stalls and ceramic repairs; children race chipped cups toward a gutter basket. At Mothwall, warm service structure draws moths, pipe insects, thread-drying, and a low shelf selling night tea. Quiet Grates are watched from below as well as above.

Barge's Long Landing is a linked public face where arrivals are judged as cargo, medicine, people, animals, or trouble. Bellrig turns tuned gantry metal into warning. Silt Kitchens uses vessels too old to travel and too useful to sink. Pell's Cut names a run of care rooms, heat lenders, body-brace shops, and debt brokers used by injured carriers; a place can retain a person's name without honoring them.

South and north

Albino's Chalk Lung surrounds filter works and cloth-layered windows. Brightgut Market keeps stubborn color under translucent salvage roofing: roots, broth oil, buttons, prayer cord, and medicine glass. The Low Choir uses drain resonance for inspection calls and mourning songs. Milkstone Courts catches a first surge in absorbent pale stone before releasing it toward cisterns.

Nocturn's Lantern Orchard maintains glow-fungi in ceramic lamp sleeves with recognizable heat and smell. Hushworks holds quiet crafts whose neighbors cannot afford careless hammering. Coldmouth draws mountain air into storage while nearby grooming heat helps wet furred residents. Inkstep's reflective marks lead past tutors, copyists, storytellers, and counterfeiters using the same benches at different hours.

Where paths meet

At the Split, Fourwater Court gathers foam, offerings, debris, lost papers, and animals against its screens. Witness Steps lends seats to dispute and recollection. Umbrella Exchange links merchant canopies, letting a traveler buy dry standing space through coins, gossip, favors, or custom. The Red Seam is an old structural fracture repaired with resin, metal, tokens, and generations of conflicting credit.

Border households learn several warning calls and food customs. Pavement, gutter sound, lamps, toll habits, and the help a stranger expects reveal a boundary more reliably than a painted line.

Distance is measured through exposure. A short journey may cost one dry sleeve in thin rain and several rope changes at flood-hour. A child, damaged wing, hot medicine, or a name somebody is looking for can make the same destination much farther away.
