EVERRAIN

Beastkin Peoples

Jayjo’s Beastkin are people whose bodies shape material needs without assigning character, culture, or destiny.

Personhood before category

Beastkin are families, citizens, workers, officials, artists, patients, and neighbors. Their lineages predate the current tier order. Competing histories connect them to older adaptation, divine creation, or personhood that was never exclusively human; none is a complete, confirmed origin.

Legal personhood does not prevent practical exclusion. An equipment standard, lift rating, doorway, food label, or clinic baseline can quietly decide whose body fits. Anatomy becomes an excuse for extra charges and dangerous work. A person who smells a leak is still injured by entering it; strength is not consent to carry an unsafe load.

Bodies and care

Rat lineages need tail-safe seating, whisker room, drying, frequent energy, and visibility in crowds. Ursine bodies may need wide drying frames, enough food, reinforced furniture, and time to dry heavy fur. Avian people need feather care, ventilation, molt privacy, and lateral clearance whether or not they can fly.

Amphibious people need clean moisture, not dirty rain. A breathing cup or mist veil is ordinary access equipment. Horns and growing antlers need clearance, nutrition, and careful repair; they are not removable decoration. Canine scent can be overwhelmed, feline night vision does not make a fall safe, and scale-bearing bodies require appropriate warmth, shed care, and chemical protection.

Fox, rabbit, deer, bovine, gopher, reptile, and other lineages vary among individuals. Hearing, balance, vibration sense, or mass may affect material possibilities without providing a profession or temperament. Crowkin are not Lensface Crows; Ratkin are not Rimwise.

Households rather than species costumes

Mixed-lineage and human–Beastkin families are common. Children may express a dominant body plan with secondary inherited traits; siblings need not share identical anatomy. Adoption and chosen kin carry body knowledge through practice rather than blood.

A shared meal can use different textures, portions, and safe ingredients while giving everyone equal belonging. Clothing needs tail vents, muzzle fit, feather-safe collars, scale-flex panels, or drainage beneath fur. Grooming may be medical, intimate, professional, ritual, or simply practical; touch and ownership of shed material are negotiated.

Where culture gathers

Zeno maker houses organize around fitted tools and work that survives use. Barge crews negotiate complementary abilities through trust. Albino households preserve water knowledge, while Nocturn networks value controlled visibility and partial witness. Upper-tier presentation may conceal needs to remain socially acceptable.

Beastkin-led clinics, unions, equipment libraries, kitchens, schools, bathhouses, and art spaces are ordinary institutions. District, class, faith, migration, disability, age, and family shape culture as strongly as lineage. An elder may hold knowledge and still be entitled to privacy, error, boredom, and change.

A rain-dark doorway separates wet stone from a sheltered interior.
