The street closes around it
A scan flag, permit mismatch, crowd surge, or impossible movement can trigger stopping, verification, and recording. Classification follows: clerical, behavioral, structural, contamination. People may be fined, rerouted, held, detained, or removed while seals, barriers, escorts, and one-way passages reshape the place.
A maintenance closure, storm collapse, riot, or chemical-spill explanation can become the public account. Record links fail, cameras blank, and witnesses leave separately. These actions can overlap, repeat, or stall. They are not a guaranteed eight-step timetable performed by an all-knowing agency.
In the Outer Rim, local districts and groups usually respond first; official influence may arrive indirectly. Gate-adjacent events escalate through Guardians sooner. The Eyes become relevant when a shared account threatens the city's explanation, not as the automatic cause of every irregularity.
What still needs doing
Companions need finding. Dependents need someone familiar. People need food, rest, dry clothing, treatment, and access to belongings behind the barrier. A cook's pot can remain inaccessible through the only profitable trading window. A carrier can lose a wage while being questioned about why a route failed.
Keeping uncertainty is important. A missing person is not yet proof of death, removal, or supernatural consumption. A frightened witness may know one detail exactly and doubt another. Separating observation from cause does not require dismissing either the person or the event.
Closure without a reset
Afterward, stalls relocate, route prices change, warning phrases become taboo, signage disappears, and neighbors stop using a familiar lane. At the next shift, the event becomes a wage argument or another caregiver's lost time. Later, a repaired wall can conceal the old entrance while local movement continues bending around it.
Finding a missing child ends one search, not necessarily the anomaly. Reopening a lane restores access, not the lost meal or public record. Paying a debt settles one material consequence. Nobody receives all of those repairs automatically because a notice has changed.
The city can suppress an explanation and still fail to remove the everyday knowledge left behind: carry another portion, check the exit with someone who passed recently, keep a name in more than one place, and ask who still has work to do after the officials leave.
